  Amber and Hazelwood
« on: April 25, 2009, 11:59:58 PM » by Autumn
OK, I admit, although I am familiar with using some essential oils, and although I had heard that amber helps with depression, I had never learned why until recently.  I mean, I used amber as an antidepressant by wearing it; but for all I knew it might have worked because the color was so pretty that it just made me happy. LOL  Then again, I thought, maybe it was the power of suggestion.  I had worn an amber pendant for years and my children teethed on it, as well as any of the infants I babysat.  They seemed magnetically attracted to it.  Then, a few weeks ago, my daughter told me that she wanted to buy an amber teething necklace for my granddaughter. So, I was thinking that it would be a pendant that they chewed on, like my necklace.  Instead, the necklaces were amber chips that surrounded the neck and which supposedly worked because of your skin absorbing the oil that is impregnated in the amber. At that point, I was thinking Really? Is there that much oil in it that it actually is absorbed through your skin? I was a little skeptical, but willing to give it a shot because the necklaces were pretty anyway.  I think that the necklace I used to wear helped me some, but not to the extent that they were talking about.  But the one I used to wear was just one piece of amber on the end of a chain and I was wearing it outside my clothing most of the time, not knowing you were supposed to absorb the oil. So, I sent off for three necklaces, one for my grandbaby one for my daughter, and one for myself since I misplaced my necklace some time back.  When we got them a few days later, we immediately put them on Amy.  She had been so fussy for several stressful days because she is in the middle of teething 4 molars at the same time and she has been absolutely miserable. I wasn't really expecting all that much from the necklaces, but I was hoping that they did at least a little bit of good because she really needed it.  Since she felt so bad, I figured that we would have her wear more than one necklace to try to get her up to therapeutic level quickly.  I couldn't have been more surprised at her reaction.  Not only did she immediately smile and reach for the amber when she saw it, but she seemed very happy that we were putting them on her.  On top of that, she scaled back her crying immediately and stopped fussing very quickly.  We've experimented with having the necklaces, on her or not on her and it does seem to keep making a definite change in her behaviour.  It seems to work best if she has at least one necklace on all the time.  We usually have two on her.  Except for occasionally, it's been working like a charm.  Those times when it's not working as well are when she's not been wearing the necklaces for several days in a row because they were left at my house by accident after her bath.  So, the effect wears off and she starts to feel bad again.  When she gets to feeling bad enough, it takes a while longer to get it back under control - the same as if you are taking pain meds.  Also, we've only been using two instead of three, so that may be part of the difference.  Tonight, I ordered myself a grownup lady's version of the necklaces because my neck is a bit too fat to be really comfortable or good looking with the "teething necklace" I got for myself.  Besides, I probably could use a higher dose, since I'm like ten times the weight of my grandbaby, and the growup versions with the rectangles give a lot more surface area next to your skin. I'm also getting one of the hazelwood necklaces to see if that works as well as they say for the stuff that's good for.  My daughter is getting ready to see if she can enroll in the backpain study, because of her scoliosis.  Apparently there's a number of people who use amber for pain regularly,  Who knew? Now, if this is starting to sound like one of those commercials that are all over the Internet, I apologize.  It's not mean to be that way.  But, it wouldn't be fair if I didn't at least give credit to the site that educated me and also let others know where they can get the same thing.  I'm not making any money from this, it's just so that networking can take place.  The main page is http://hyenacart.com/inspiredbyfinn/ click on the links and explore, there's more there than what it seems like it will be when you start at the first page. Oh, I almost forgot.  My daughter gets a 20% discount through the cloth diapering forum she belongs to.  I wrote to Kate (the Inspired by Finn owner) and she gave me permission to post the code for the 20% discount here as well for you to use if you want to get something.  The code is save20 and the link to the website is  http://hyenacart.com/inspiredbyfinn/ If anyone else tries either the amber or the hazelwood, I'd love to get some followup so that we can have a more complete picture.  Also, please post other natural things that you've tried or heard of.  We can start separate topics for them so that we can keep track of it easier.
